Adding Documents

In this guide, you will learn how to add documents to your binder.

Quick-add documents to your Binder

The fastest way to add documents to your binder is by dragging and dropping a PDF file onto the E-Ring Binder program window.  The file will be loaded directly to the end of your current binder, with a document name that matches the filename.  To learn how to later update this document’s name, nickname, tags, or custom citation, see Editing Document Information.

Add documents through the Add Document window

Alternatively, if you want to customize your document information or order as you load it into E-Ring Binder, you can add documents through the “Add Document” window.  To open the Add Document window, click on the Add Document icon under the “Organize” Tab, or press Ctrl+D on your keyboard.

In the Add Document window, you can choose documents to add by clicking “Browse for files…” and selecting the file location, or by dragging and dropping PDF files into the designated area.  Documents that you have selected will display at the bottom of the Add Document window.

You can optionally customize documents by clicking “Add Document Details” or you can add documents as-is by clicking “Submit.”

Add Document Details (Optional)

For each of the documents you selected in Step 2, you can add customized document information:

  • You can modify the display name, as well as provide a custom nickname.

  • You can add new tags by entering text into the “Create New Tag” text box and clicking the “Add New Tag” button. If you have existing tags from other documents, you can select a tag from the list to add the tag to your new document.

  • You can also add a custom citation to your document.

    • When you copy text from a document with a custom citation, you will see the option to “Copy with Citations.” Doing so will append the custom citation to the end of the copied text.

    • To add a pincite to your custom citation, click the “Insert Pincite” button. This will add placeholder text “[/page]” to your citation, which E-Ring Binder will later translate into the correct page number. You will also need to enter the starting page of your document (if the document does not begin on page 1). For example, for a court opinion that begins on page 878 of the reporter, ensure you enter 878 in the “Start Page” field.

Next, you can choose the order that you would like your documents to display by clicking “Organize Documents” or you can submit the documents in the current order.

Organize Documents (Optional)

On the Organize Documents page, your newly added documents will appear in the list on the left (“New Documents”), and your existing documents will appear in the list on the right (“Current Documents”).

When you press submit, your documents will be added in the order shown in the Current Documents list. Any new documents that are not added to the Current Documents list will be automatically added to the end of your binder.

You can reorder your new documents in the Current Documents list by clicking and dragging an item from the New Documents list to the Current Documents list, or by selecting your new documents and then clicking on the arrow buttons between the two lists.

Clicking the right arrow will move the new document to the end of the Current Documents list, clicking the left arrow will remove the selected document from the Current Documents list, and clicking the double-left arrow will remove all newly added documents from the Current Documents list.

You can drag one or more documents on top of another in the Current Documents list to create a parent-child relationship between the documents. See “Document Families” for more information.

Submit

Click the “Submit” button and your documents will be loaded into E-Ring Binder.
