Document Families

This guide will instruct you on how to create and utilize document families.

Grouping and Ungrouping Families

Document families allow you to group documents together in a parent-child relationship. A document family will display in the Navigation list with the child documents indented underneath the parent document.

To group documents into a family, first click on the “Reorder Documents” icon under the “Organize” tab.

Then, select the desired child or children documents by clicking on them in the Navigation list. You can select more than one document by holding control or shift on your keyboard as you click.

Once you have documents selected, drag your selection on top of your desired parent document to group the family. The placement indicator will be indented under the desired parent document to show when a family will be created. Dragging a document into an already existing family will add that document into the family.

A document family will display in the Navigation list with the child documents indented underneath the parent document.

Document C will become a child of Document B.

Document C will not become a child of Document B.

If a dragged document already has child documents, that family will be collapsed into the new family.

Document B and Document C will both become children of Document A.

To ungroup a family, select the child or children documents you wish to remove from the family by clicking on them in the Navigation list. Drag your selection to where you would like the document placed, ensuring that the placement indicator is not indented.

Labeling Families

To label families together, click on the “Label Documents” icon under the “Organize” tab.

Select your desired labeling style, and then click the checkbox next to “Label document families together?”

This will reveal a new field named “Child Labeling Style.” Select your desired child labeling style and submit. Your families will now be labelled according to your chosen labeling styles.

See “Labeling Documents” for information on how to create document labels.
